1st of the Month Post
Now that I have completed Final Fantasy XIII would like to pass on some helpful information and final review.
Info:
The story is broken up into 13 chapters. Game play is very liner and you will not able to backtrack to previous chapters. While this is true for most of the game you do have the option of going back to chapters 11 and 12 towards the end of Ch 13 before the final boss battle. Because I was unaware of the option to go back I attempted to finish all the extra missions in Ch 11, it is possible but extremely difficult.
Stage 10 of the Crystalium is reached by completing the game. Once you have completed the game, stage 10 is unlocked and you are placed back at the last save point before the final battle.
When upgrading use natural items to get the 3x points bonus, then use the higher valued items. If you do not know what a natural item is then sort by Category and natural items will be moved to top of list. You can gain several level of experience by using more then the amount of points needed to move on to next level.
(Ex: if you only need 1000 points to move form level 1 to 2 but have 90 bomb cores and one bomb core is 500 points then use more then 2 bomb cores. Be careful not to use too many since weapons/accessories each have a exp limit at each stage of development and a special item is need to move onto next stage. When I fist started upgrading I though the warning was to not move up more then one level at a time. It turned out to be miss translated Japanese)
Overall thoughts about the game:
Because of the automated battle system and only controlling lead character during battles I feel as though I did not play enough with each character. The summons were virtually never used except when team was about to die and I needed a HP boost. They did not provide much support when battling except for one enemy. Also, the time limits for achieving 5 starts in a battle discourages using summons in most cases. The game encourages grinding by making it very clean in the dialogue that the characters in to level up and by providing a trophy / achievement for collecting all items and weapons. I am annoyed that completing all the side missions in Ch 11 and obtaining rare items does not add to the story. (Also annoyed that I did not know I could return to Ch 11) Full health restored and status ailments removed after each fight along with not having to worry about mana made this game feel as though it was intended for beginner Final Fantasy players.
They story is good enough for me to recommend this game. I just wish there was an option to replay the game with all my upgraded characters and equipment. Then maybe I would get a better feel for the story as I forgot portions due to spending so much time grinding and failing mission in chapter 11.
